Do It Yourself Insecticide Products

By Eliz Guide

There are multiple insecticide products on the market today. Some are made by major brands that we all know. Other insecticide products are made by smaller and less known companies, but have the same active ingredients inside. Many people are now looking to use natural insecticide products as well.

Lets take a look at what the differences are between chemically manufactured pest control products and natural insecticides to see what the best choice for you may be when it comes to choosing a pest control product.

First, let’s take a look at chemically manufactured insecticide products. Most companies that manufacture pest control supplies, use some of the very same chemicals. Some of the most commonly used chemicals are Propoxur, Chlorpyrifos, Gyfluthrin and Pynamin Forte. Propoxur is used to kill cockroaches by luring them out of their hiding spaces. Their bodies then come in contact with the chemical and it kills them.

This is a long lasting chemical. Chlorpyrifos is another commonly used cockroach killer that kills on contact. It is also effective against other common crawlers and lasts anywhere from weeks to months.

Gyfluthrin kills pests on contact and is most effectively used for fleas and ticks. Pynamin Forte is a safe mosquito and fly killer. One main reason that people choose to use chemically manufactured insecticides is that they work almost immediately. They also last for long periods of time. Many are safely used around pets and children.

Now lets take a look at natural insecticide products. One of the latest revelations in this area is the use of American Black Walnut trees. The tree releases tannic acid, called Juglone. It is a reddish yellow substance that comes out of the leaves. Some scientists believe it can also be found in the roots of the tree.

It can affect plants and trees in a sixty to eighty foot area. They have found that the plants most affected by this tree are tomatoes, alfalfa, potatoes, apples, blackberries, rhododendrons, mountain laurels and pine trees. The substance released by the tree is known to repel various garden insects. Many people that have used this as an insecticide, have also learned that even taking tree branches and placing them around their house can help safely eliminate fleas.

Earth Friendly insecticides are made from plant derivatives. One commonly used natural insecticide is the Pyrethrum, which is made from dried flower heads. The plant looks similar to the Daisy flower. This insecticide does not discriminate, however. It will kill bad insects as well as good ones, so you would want to be careful how you use it.

It is highly effective though. Another commonly used natural insecticide is Potenone. It is a byproduct of specific types of South American plants. It is used on fruit crops and row crops. It is used for killing aphids, cockroaches, houseflies and mosquitoes. One thing to remember is that natural does not equal harmless. Many manufactures use vinegar as a base to their solutions, and that can cause irritation if it comes in contact with the skin or eyes.

Another thing to remember is that most natural insecticides do take about twice as long to be effective. Once you have used the product, you may not see results for two to four days. Most of these products do not kill on contact. However, you may be choosing to use natural insecticides because it is the more green approach to insect repellents, and it is friendlier to the environment.

After looking into the many insecticide products that are on the market, you should feel good about the choice you make. It is also nice knowing that there are such a wide variety of choices for you select from. Whether you choose the chemically manufactured insecticide or go the more natural route, choose what will work best for you and your family.
