Sunrooms are the blank canvases of the home; nothing in the home d cor rulebook states that a sunroom has to serve a specific purpose, but we can all agree that when this space is decorated into the beautiful ideal room of our dreams, our sunroom can be the perfect place to sip coffee, read a book, or serve as a playroom for the kids. Well why can t it be all three?
Many find four season sunrooms to be an awkward space to work with, and sometimes it truly does seem like in older homes that the builders stuck on an extra room to the side of the house for no obvious reason. Home improvement is all about analysing the desired functionality of a space and the actual space available. Many times, our children s bedrooms are only large enough to fit a sleeping area and perhaps a reading and play corner leaving much to be desired, but with a sunroom, kids can have a sunny room of the house designed especially with their creative play in mind. Combine this playroom concept with d cor that creates a tranquil retreat for the adults.
Rooms that let in a lot of natural sunlight can afford to have darker paint on the walls, which will affordably transform your room in a matter of hours. Think of colours that are just a little bit childlike and a little bit adult. A pumpkin orange and sage-green are two earthy colours that are sophisticated yet playful. Keep the trim a soft neutral, like a cream, so eyes aren t distracted from the window views.
After painting, consider the window treatments. Crisp new roman shades lined in blackout material will significantly reduce your heating and cooling costs, and won t look as overbearing as panel after panel of curtains would. Next: complementary colours. If you chose the pumpkin orange, the complementary colour would a variety of blues and greens; combine warm with cool! Tan roman shades available at your home improvement store is a great place to start, and consider adding your own inexpensive blue embellishments such as blue ribbon or 2-3 of blue fabric, or just make your own roman shades from many how-to guides online and from fabric stores.
Area rugs, floor pillows, window seat cushions, throw rugs, pillows and other soft touches in various textures and patterns within the colour scheme will add a comforting and inviting feel for both kids and adults. The House Queen online decorating store has all of these comfort d cor accessories and more. One fun accessory to add are large floor cushions in kid friendly shapes like Rapee s big banana pillow available through the House Queen. The Living Textiles Children s Collection at The House Queen website provides fun wall d cor for children that can be incorporated into your decorating theme. A growth chart is one of their products from the children s collections at The House Queen and fun to incorporate into this room.
Consider the furniture that will be engaging for a crafts, learning, and play. A small table and chairs arranged on a soft (and washable) area rug will define a play space nicely. Storage options are important to keep toys and supplies off of the floor. Bright coloured bins or buckets coloured the same as the accent colour used throughout the room will be perfect for throwing toys, games, and supplies in. If there is not enough room to have a large bookcase or shelving unit, build some floating shelves. This d cor is simple and affordable, but makes a great impact.
An adult seating area, like a bench seat with fun cushions and an affordable table set from your home store will create a truly sophisticated and adult feel to part of the room. Add some indoor elegance by looking into some of the many formal to casual classy cushions and pillows, table linens, and other seating accessories in your colour theme that you can find by clicking here. This way, you can use the table to help the kids with their crafts, but enjoy morning coffee with the ladies at another time.
